W.Va. fugitive awaiting trial caught in N.C.
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- A West Virginia fugitive who fled after mailing his electronic monitoring device to his probation officer has been captured in North Carolina.
Michael Cunningham, 51, of Camp Creek, is awaiting extradition to West Virginia, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Cunningham was arrested Sunday night in Rutherford County, N.C.
Cunningham was on home confinement awaiting trial on fraud charges when he took off his electronic monitoring bracelet and disappeared, the Marshals Service said.
Cunningham mailed the monitoring bracelet to his probation officer in September. The federal courthouse in Bluefield was temporarily closed after a worker at the post office in the building heard beeping from the package and an X-ray showed a device inside with wires.
