CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A nonprofit group that helps parents pay for and find affordable child care services moved to a more central location this week.
Connect Child Care Resource and Referral moved its office to the Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center at 1701 5th Ave. in Charleston.
"It's going to be centrally located for our clients and make it much more easier for them to access us," said Toni Walters, director of the agency. "Some people have to take public transportation to get to us and it was like a daylong process by the time they got here. The bus only runs [to the Cabin Creek office] once every hour."
Connect, which has been in business since 2006, is funded by grants through the West Virginia Department of Heath and Human Resources. It had been operating out of an older facility in Cabin Creek.
The organization has more than 1,400 clients in Kanawha, Jackson, Roane and Clay counties. It is meant to help with the cost of daycare while its clients work or go to school, according to Walters.
Connect also provides training for the more than 350 daycare providers it works with.
"We help them receive payment from the state and have a traveling resource van. Our lending library lends out toys and books to the daycares," Walters said.
Clients must go to the Connect office to see if they qualify for the program and sign up. Even if a person's income is too much to qualify, the program might still be able to help, Walters said.
"Or if you don't qualify, we'll help find providers in the area. We have a referral service," she said.
Walters said the agency had been searching for several months to find a new facility. The other nonprofits located inside the Schoenbaum Center are a bonus for clients, she said.
"The business located inside the Schoenbaum Center are businesses our families can benefit from, as well," she said. "The whole building is filled with nonprofits."
