Bill O'Brien named Beckley mayor

BECKLEY, W.Va. - Longtime radio broadcaster Bill O'Brien has been named mayor of Beckley.

Media outlets report that City Council chose O'Brien on Thursday night to replace Emmett Pugh. O'Brien was sworn in on Friday.

O'Brien was a local radio personality for more than 40 years before he retired in 2013. He formerly owned WJLS radio.

Pugh stepped down on Dec. 31 under a settlement involving alleged ethics violations. The violations included the use of public office for private gain and accepting improper gifts. Pugh admitted no wrongdoing.

O'Brien will serve the remaining two-and-a-half years of Pugh's job.
