Law joins Kanawha-Charleston Health Department staff
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- John Law, a former spokesman for the state Department of Health and Human Resources, is the new public information officer for the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.
Law started at the health department Thursday.
"I'm extremely happy to be here," Law said. "I think it's a good fit for me. The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department does some really amazing things and I hope I'll be able to help them move even further along."
Law, the DHHR's former communications director and assistant secretary, was fired from the DHHR in early 2013 after allegedly interfering with the bidding of a marketing and advertising contract to favor a Charleston agency over an Ohio company that was ultimately awarded the contract. Law was not charged with any crime. He had worked for the department 12 years.
For the health department, Law will be working with reporters as well as helping to develop public health policy guidelines, said Dr. Rahul Gupta, executive director of the department.
"I will probably be monitoring some legislation and working in the Legislature -- that's where West Virginia policy is," Law said. "It won't be lobbying, it will be keeping the folks at Kanawha-Charleston up-to-date with what's happening with legislation."
Gupta said he's glad to have Law and his wide base of experience. In his past interactions with Law, Law was always sharp and professional, Gupta said.
"I'm really proud and excited to have him join our institution," Gupta said. Reach Lori Kersey at email@example.com or 304-348-1240.
