Rhode Island man gets prison on state drug plea
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Cranston, R.I., man who was found with hundreds of prescription painkillers and thousands in cash in a West Virginia motel room has been sentenced to a federal prison term.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says 29-year-old Benjamin Steven Campopiano pleaded guilty last September to possession of oxycodone with intent to distribute. He was sentenced Wednesday in Charleston to two years and eight months in prison.
At the time of his arrest in a Charleston-area motel room, Campopiano had nearly 300 tablets of the powerful painkiller and nearly $8,000 in cash. Prosecutors say the cash was the proceeds from his illegal drug transactions.
