New charges filed in case of missing Lewis County women
WESTON, W.Va. -- A Lewis County man was arrested Thursday for the second time and charged with the murder of his mother and grandmother, who disappeared more than 13 years ago.
Joseph Edward Metz, 39, of Horner, was arrested without incident and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, according to Lewis County Sheriff Adam Gissy.
Metz's mother, Mary Friend, 46, and his grandmother, Maxine Stalnaker, 69, disappeared in December 1999 after they left their Jane Lew home on a Christmas shopping trip. Their bodies have never been found.
Metz and two other men were charged in the women's deaths last year, but those charges were dismissed without prejudice - meaning they could be refiled.
