The Overflow Family Worship Center, Pastor Trevor and lady Beshawn Sands will celebrate their First Anniversary on Jan. 17 and 18 at Spirit Life Fellowship Church, 137 Sixth St., Dunbar. The schedule includes: 7 p.m. Jan. 17, a special service honoring Lady Beshawn Sands. Guest speaker will be Pastor Scott R. White of Living Water Worship Centre of Charleston. On Jan. 18, the afternoon worship begins at 2 p.m. Guest speaker will be Elder/Prophet Brian K. Thompson of Fresh Fire Ministries of Charleston. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 520 Kanawha Blvd., has a discussion group that meets for one hour every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. This week, the topic will begin a three-week discussion of 9/11 and what really happened. Have we been told the truth?
The Achievers' Class of the Fifth Avenue Church of God in South Charleston will open its Clothes Closet from 10 a.m. to noon on Jan. 18. Clothes are free to families and individuals in need. The Haiti Medical Mission Trip organizers will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Charleston Woman's Club, corner of Virginia and Elizabeth streets. Leaders of this trip, which is now in its 14th year, will be Lora and Dr. Richard D. Hayes. South Charleston First Presbyterian Church is also a sponsor. The dinner will consist of spaghetti with Lora's special homemade spaghetti sauce (with or without meat), salad, bread, dessert and drinks. The cost is $10 per adult and a reduced rate for children. A video of past trips will be shown, and music will be provided from the church.
A benefit gospel sing for Sherry Hanshaw Oldaker-Thaxton will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today in Sissonville High School Auditorium. All proceeds will go to Sherry and Clifton Thaxton to help with expenses of Sherry's treatment at Duke University Medical Center in her fight against pancreatic cancer. Singers will be Still Blessed, Jay Humphreys Trio, The Taylor Brothers, Cierra Parsons, Living for Him, Calvary's Why, Pam Israel and Hanna Newman. Concessions will be sold. To-go orders will be available.
Canaan United Methodist Church will host its next Open Stage Night at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17. Open Stage is an opportunity for people to perform in a family-friendly environment. All types of performance including music, visual arts, dance, comedy, dramatic recitations, poetry, etc. are encouraged. There are no admission/entrance fees. Performances are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m., with the first performance at 7 p.m. The church is located on the West Side of Charleston at 401 Roane St.
Abundant Life Bible College, 1534 Washington St. E., will start its next six-week Associates Degree course, "Five Fold Ministry," from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 21. The topic will include the practical operation of the five-fold ministry. The cost is $100 in addition to a $25 registration fee. Sharon First Church of God on Cabin Creek in Dry Branch will operate its USDA Food Pantry and Clothing Closet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 25.
St. Michael Independent Catholic Church will be having a class on "The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary," a Journey through Christ's early life as seen through His mother's eyes. The class will be held Wednesday evenings during January at 7 p.m. The cost will be $10 person. St. Michael Independent Church is housed at Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1698 Quarrier St. They are located off of the Greenbrier St. Exit of Interstate 64 across from the Cultural Center. The CBMA Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1530 Third Ave. The pastor is the Rev. Dr. Braxton Broady. Speaker will be the Rev. Sandy Drayton, former pastor of St. Paul AME Church, 1108 Second Ave. The Rev. Drayton is the presiding elder of the Columbia District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina. All clergy are requested to wear robes for the formal occasion.
Fraziers Bottom Church of God will operate its Gift of Hope Food Pantry from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 25 at 19064 Winfield Road, Fraziers Bottom. Proof of Putnam County residence is the only requirement. Children's apparel will also be available.
