Parkersburg police shoot man after alleged robbery attempt
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Parkersburg police officer shot and killed a man following an alleged attempted robbery at a Toys R Us in Wood County on Tuesday.
Just before 1 p.m., two officers responded to a report of a robbery inside the store at Grand Central Mall in Vienna, said State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous. Two men and a woman attempted to rob someone there. A Parkersburg police officer fatally shot one of the male suspects, Baylous said.
It's unclear what led to the shooting or if the three suspects were armed. State Police are investigating, Baylous said. The dead man's name has not been released.
Two suspects fled on foot, but turned themselves into police around 5 p.m., according to Baylous. One suspect was described as a tall, white male in his early 20s with brown hair and a blue T-shirt. The second suspect was described as a white female with blond hair worn in a bun.
Their names have not been released, Baylous said.
Parkersburg Police Chief Joseph Martin said one officer received minor injuries, including a strained arm. Martin would not identify the officers involved, and referred other questions from the Gazette to Baylous.
Martin told the Parkersburg News and Sentinel that the officers saw a person being robbed inside the mall's food court before the shooting. The officers followed one male suspect to the parking lot, where he attempted to drive away, Martin said. One officer tried to stop the suspect, but was dragged alongside the vehicle. The second officer pulled out his service weapon and shot the suspect, the newspaper reported.
