W.Va. state parks offer escape from water crisis

By Judy Hamilton

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Do you want to escape the stress of the Elk River water crisis? Have you finally conquered those piles of laundry and dishes that couldn't be done during the contamination and need a break? Maybe the loads are still there and you don't have the strength deal with them yet, or you just want a long safe shower.

West Virginia State Parks may have just what you need, especially if you're a bit short on financial resources after the holidays. Seven state park lodges are offering $50 room rates for any night in January. They are:

  • Cacapon Resort, Berkeley Springs, 304-258-1022
  • Chief Logan Lodge, Logan, 304-855-6100
  • Hawks Nest, Ansted, 304-658-5212
  • North Bend, Cairo, 304-643-2931
  • Twin Falls Resort, Mullens, 304-294-4000
  • Tygart Lake, Grafton, 304-265-6144
  • Pipestem Resort, 304-466-1800
  • To take advantage of this rate, call a lodge direct and ask for the "WV50" rate. You may also make reservations via the online reservation system at www.wvstateparks.com. Simply go to "Getaways to Ponder" on the website and select "$50 room rates at 7 Lodge Parks."

The $50 room rates are for standard forest-view and mountain-view rooms and are applied to one or more night rentals. "WV50" cannot be combined with other discounts, packages or specials, and the rate is subject to taxes.

At www.wvstateparks.com, you can also find other deals and packages, such as the "Crackerjack" promotion at Pipestem Resort's McKeever Lodge. Rooms are 50 percent off standard rates when you stay on a Sunday and Monday anytime through March 31, excluding Feb. 2, 3, 23 and 24. If you can plan a longer visit, ask for a 20 percent discount off additional consecutive room nights for Wednesday and Thursday.

North Bend Lodge is offering a "romance package" for one night's lodging and breakfast for two delivered to your room for $85 through March 31. Additional nights are available at a discounted rate. The rate includes taxes and gratuities.

Tygart Lake State Park is offering an "On the House" deal. If you stay at Tygart Lodge any two consecutive nights, they will pick up the tab on the breakfast of your choice from the breakfast menu or the full breakfast buffet when offered at the lakeside restaurant. "On the House" also includes a $15 Tygart Lake gift shop certificate for each room rented with this package.

Don't forget that it's ski and snow season at Canaan Valley Resort State Park in Davis. Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and tubing are available. Visit www.canaanresort.com to learn more about their winter vacation packages, including the "Stay and Ski Package" that offers nightly lodging, daily breakfast, next-day lift ticket, daily ski or snowboard equipment rental and Beech Club privileges for the rate of $99 per person, per night, double occupancy, midweek Jan. 20 through Feb. 28, and March 2-15 daily.

If you are a college student or faculty member, you get an additional $10 discount with valid ID. If you are first-time skier, mention that you are and you will receive complimentary ski or snowboard lessons by calling 304-866-4121, ext. 1 (reservations).

Probably just thinking about these possible adventures has reduced your stress level a bit. Now may be the time to get your calendar out and make the plans.
