BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A smartphone application is being developed to provide Beckley area residents with emergency notifications.
It's called "Heads Up Beckley,'' and city Emergency Services Director Kevin Taylor says it should be ready to download by June or July.
The Register-Herald reports that Taylor learned last year about the first-of-its-kind "Heads Up Huntington'' application. He found out the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey was accepting grant applications from other cities interested in the app, which is available for Android and iPhone users. He applied, and the city received a $30,000 grant.
Users of the free app will be able access information about school closings, traffic jams and accidents, health and safety concerns, power outages and more.
