CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State police from West Virginia and Maryland teamed up to find a mentally disabled girl who went missing near Charles Town on Monday.
West Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said the 8-year-old girl was last seen on Big Spring Drive near Middleway at about 7 p.m. Her parents called troopers from the Charles Town State Police detachment a short time later.
Because the girl was mentally disabled, troopers began a search immediately, Baylous said. Troopers asked the Maryland State Police Aviation Unit for help, and a helicopter was sent to help find the girl.
Baylous said thermal imaging equipment on the helicopter spotted the girl at about 9 p.m. She was found lying in the fetal position on the ground outside a house nearby, he said.
Baylous said the girl was treated for exposure and returned to her parents.
