Elementary students offered scholarships with essay contest
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- One elementary school student will win a $5,000 college scholarship in an essay contest co-sponsored by the West Virginia Treasurer's Office.
Also, 15 students will win $500 in SMART529 investment accounts.
This is the seventh year for the "When I Grow Up" essay contest, hosted by Treasurer John Perdue and The Harford Life Investment Group.
Winners will be chosen from among students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Each winner's school also will receive a $500 cash award.
Last year, more than 4,500 students participated in the contest.
SMART529 is a tuition program by the West Virginia Prepaid College Tuition and Savings Program Board of Trustees.
