Ex-Family Foundation leader charged with domestic battery

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The former leader of a conservative "family values" group faces charges of domestic battery after police say he choked and hit his girlfriend earlier this month.

Kevin Brent McCoy, 53, is scheduled for a hearing March 13 in Kanawha County Magistrate Court on charges of domestic assault and domestic battery. Kanawha sheriff's deputies arrested McCoy after an alleged altercation with his live-in girlfriend Jan. 10 at their home in Elkview.

The woman told deputies that she and McCoy were drinking when an argument turned physical, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court. McCoy allegedly kicked the woman's legs, causing her to trip down the stairs, and then allegedly choked her. She told deputies she did not know if she lost consciousness.

The woman told deputies she asked to leave and McCoy told her she was "only leaving in a body bag," according to the complaint. The woman told police she eventually fought back, but McCoy hit her about 10 times. She said McCoy is routinely abusive and is worse after drinking or using drugs, according to the complaint. Police said the woman's neck was red and she had abrasions on her left leg.

McCoy was arraigned in Magistrate Court and released on a personal recognizance bond.

He returned a phone message last week and said that the arrest is a private matter, unrelated to his political career. McCoy said he is no longer affiliated with the West Virginia Family Foundation, which he led for several years. The group is the state affiliate of the American Family Association, and the national organization's website still lists McCoy as president of the West Virginia group.

As leader of the group, McCoy opposed protecting LGBT people in state hate crime laws and was against changing the state's anti-bullying policy to include gay and lesbian students.
