CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston woman who a jury convicted of child neglect was sentenced Friday to serve time in a drug treatment program and spend 15 weekends in jail.
Susan Nicole Adkins, 39, will also be on home confinement for one to five years after she completes an inpatient drug treatment program. She overdosed on heroin in front of her 2-year-old child in July and jurors found her guilty of child neglect creating a substantial risk of bodily injury or death.
Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom also sentenced Adkins to 10 years of extended supervised release, according to assistant prosecutor Fred Giggenbach.
On July 9, Adkins drove her car into an alley near McQueen and Red Oak streets on Charleston's West Side. While her son was strapped in his car seat in the back of the car, Adkins passed out after injecting herself with heroin.
