CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Leanne Quinn started praying when Joey Keith Jeffrey held a gun to her head, a woman who was there told jurors Tuesday.
Cindy Creathers, who says she watched and participated in the brutal beating of Quinn, testified during the second day of Jeffrey's trial.
Jeffrey, 44, of Witcher Creek, could be sentenced to life in prison on a kidnapping charge in the case. His trial began Monday in Kanawha Circuit Court.
Jeffrey is accused of abducting his cousin, Quinn, 34, in December 2012. Prosecutors say Jeffrey beat Quinn, stabbed her and used an electrical cord to shock her, before leaving her on the side of a mountain.
When the three got to the top of the mountain near Witcher Creek, Jeffrey told Quinn "to get down on her knees," testified Creathers, 38. "He put the gun to the back of her head and she looked at me and said, 'What do I do now?' I told her all you can do is pray."
Creathers said Jeffrey then moved the gun and shot just beside Quinn's head.
Jeffrey's attorney, Shawn Bayliss, argued that the fight was more between Quinn and Creathers, because both women were involved with Jeffrey.
Bayliss emphasized Creathers had faced the same kidnapping charge as Jeffrey, but struck a deal with prosecutors in exchange for her testimony against Jeffrey. Kanawha Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman sentenced her to one to five years in jail for conspiracy to commit robbery. She was transported from the Central Regional Jail to testify.
A forensic analyst with the State Police testified that while Creathers' DNA was found on a knife, Jeffrey's was not.
On Dec. 8, 2012, Jeffrey, Quinn and Creathers were together at the Knights Inn in Kanawha City. They had been using methamphetamine and taking prescription pills, according to testimony from Creathers and Quinn.
Once Quinn left, Jeffrey believed she was robbing his trailer, prosecutors said. They said he confronted Quinn after he saw some of his things in the back of a car she had been in.
Creathers told jurors that Quinn was beaten so badly, "you couldn't see anything but her eyes when she got up -- she had bled so hard from her head."
The "meat" was showing on Quinn's hands, after Creathers said he hit them repeatedly with an axe handle.
