First Presbyterian Youth Group is hosting a "Hoops for Hope" event to raise money for Hunger Relief from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 23 in the First Presbyterian Church Activities Building, 16 Leon Sullivan Way. The fundraiser is combined into two events: a Foul Shot Contest and lunch. The Foul Shot Contest is for middle and high school students only. The contest features 100 foul shots per person and whoever makes the most baskets wins. Prizes include an iPad Mini, basketballs and more. The lunch will be sponsored by Chick-fil-A. A suggested donation of $10 per person, with a $30 maximum per family is suggested. Proceeds will be split between World Vision's 30 Hour Famine and the Covenant House Food Pantry. Institute Church of the Nazarene Pastor's Anniversary Committee will be selling chicken dinners from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. The Fathers House Missionary Baptist Church: will have its Second Annual Celebrity Black History Celebration service at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the church. A special guest speaker will portray former South African President Nelson Mandela. Musical guest will be St. Paul Male Chorus. Musical icon portrayals will feature Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and a host of other famous celebrities. Participants are encouraged to come to the service adorned in character and dressed as their favorite African American character, living or dead, to help celebrate Black history.
The Bishop Hodges (Knights of Columbus) Council #9483, based in Hurricane, will have its 22nd Annual Mardi Gras Dinner and Charity Auction at 6 p.m. on March 1 at the Catholic Church of the Ascension in Hurricane.
