CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State employees plan to rally at the West Virginia Capitol to call for a pay increase, benefit improvements and better working conditions.
Members of West Virginia Public Workers Union, UE Local 170, will gather at 10 a.m. today in the lower rotunda.
The union's proposals include expanding employee grievance rights and increased enforcement of occupational safety and health laws for public workers.
Local 170 vice president Chris Wolford says the union also is concerned about the state's failure to fill vacancies. He says understaffing and unrealistic caseload standards have led to turnover, mandatory overtime and other problems.
