DUNBAR, W.Va. -- Dunbar City Council will allow the new Dunbar police chief to promote a lieutenant to the rank of captain.
Council members voted Tuesday night to amend the city code, providing the police department with one police captain. The captain ranking had been done away with several years ago, Mayor Terry Greenlee said.
However, Greenlee felt that it should be added again after hiring new Police Chief Jesse Bailes earlier this year. The department has three lieutenants, but does not have a proper second-in-command, he said.
"We needed to establish a rank below the chief but above the lieutenants," Greenlee said.
The three lieutenants would take tests to determine who would be promoted to captain among them, he said.
Also during Tuesday night's meeting, council members approved a proclamation making May 17 as "National Kids to Parks Day." The event, in its fourth year, promotes outdoor actives among families nationwide.
