CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The mother of a man who was shot nine times just wants to know why, she said in court Thursday.
Franklin Delano Beverly, 31, of Dunbar, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to attempted murder, was sentenced to 3 to 15 years in prison. He shot Joe Green in October 2012 in an apartment complex near Shawnee Park.
Beverly was found competent to stand trial earlier this month after previously being ruled incompetent several times by psychiatrists at the William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital in Weston.
"Everyday my son says, 'Mom, why me? Why did Frankie Beverly do this to me?'" Geraldine King said through tears before Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom handed down the sentence.
"I'm not sure we're ever going to know why," Bloom said.
Green still suffers from injuries because of the shooting, his mother said.
Assistant Kanawha Prosecutor Fred Giggenbach said Green's family has close to $200,000 worth of medical bills.
"Nothing is more difficult for a parent than to have a child that's injured or killed," Giggenbach said.
