SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The city of South Charleston will replace a truck destroyed by fire, its city council agreed Thursday.
At its regular meeting, council approved the purchase of a 2014 Ford F550 4X4 truck from Stephens Auto Center in Julian. The public works department will use the $61,000 truck.
"We had a truck catch on fire and got a check from the insurance company for $29,000," City Manager Carlton Lee said. "So the expense to the city is only $32,000."
In other business, council passed an ordinance to transfer property in the Tremont Subdivision of the Montrose area to the South Charleston Development Authority. This action is part of the ongoing urban renewal project, City Treasurer Hannah Pettitt said.
"They buy property to tear down the houses, rebuild and then sell," Pettitt said.
Council also passed an ordinance to rezone property on Chestnut Street near South Charleston High School, making way for a Dollar General store.
"That'll be a good business for the area," Mayor Frank Mullens said.
Also, recreation Director Arnett Hoston announced the South Charleston Recreation Center will host the Mountain State Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament Saturday.
"South Charleston High School's boys' team will play Beckley in the championship game and the girls' will play Parkersburg for third place," Hoston said.
