One-of-a-kind Sheetz grocery planned for WVU dorm

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sheetz, the national gas station and convenience store chain, will debut its first-ever grocery store in Morgantown this fall.

The one-of-a-kind Sheetz store will be located in University Place, West Virginia University's newest dorm currently under construction.

On Wednesday, WVU unveiled the concept, which will include a 15,000 square-foot restaurant and grocery store on the ground floor of the Sunnyside-area residence hall, also slated to be finished this fall.

The Sheetz outlet will serve as the first major grocery store in the downtown Morgantown area in several years.

The store, which will feature indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate more than 100 people, will serve Sheetz signature "made to order" meals, coffee and smoothies, and will also offer a variety of traditional grocery items.

University Place will offer 950 student beds in a modern suite-style setup, with amenities including a fitness center and study rooms.

WVU Dean of Students Corey Farris said in addition to no longer forcing students to leave the downtown campus to purchase groceries, it will reduce traffic and congestion in the area and attract additional development in the long-struggling Sunnyside neighborhood.

"This is an ideal location for the new concept Sheetz -- right in the heart of this modern student apartment complex that's within a few short blocks from the downtown campus as well as neighborhoods and transportation," Farris said in a release. "To live and shop here is going to be phenomenal for our student residents and for this reinvigorated neighborhood."
