Counties, cities get coal tax money
Advertiser

State Treasurer John Perdue's office recently distributed third-quarter coal severance taxes to counties and cities across the state.

Boone County received the largest payment -- $1.3 million.

In all, the state gave out $7.6 million in coal severance tax money, $5.7 million of which went to counties that produce coal.

Under state code, 75 percent of coal severance taxes go to counties where coal is mined. The other 25 percent is split along county and city population lines.

Here's a top-five breakdown of the recent county disbursements:

  • Logan County, $697,000
  • Raleigh County, $504,000
  • Marion County, $458,000
  • Mingo County, $355,000
