CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A preliminary hearing will be held next week for a Charleston woman accused of trying to sell her baby for rent money.
Rebecca Sue Taylor, 19, of 1300 Renaissance Circle was arrested Wednesday and charged with trying to sell her 5-month-old son, according to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha Magistrate Court.
According to the complaint, an acquaintance, Leigh Burr, went to the Charleston Police Department on Sunday and told officers Taylor kept trying to sell her baby. Burr told police Taylor offered to sell the infant for $10,000.
Burr told police Taylor called several times asking for money for the child, eventually saying she would take $5,000 for the boy.
Taylor told Burr she never bonded with the child, and needed the money to get a new apartment, according to the criminal complaint.
Taylor was in the South Central Regional Jail on Friday in lieu of a $2,500 property or 10 percent cash bond.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Kanawha Magistrate Court. Taylor faces a fine of $100 to $2,000 and one to five years in prison.
