CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An Elkview man was charged with murder for allegedly running over a man in Charleston early Monday.

Garrett Z. Pauley, 19, was arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Josh Freeman on Pacific Street.

Charleston police believe Pauley intentionally ran over Freeman because of a $300 drug debt.

According to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha Magistrate Court, Pauley and several passengers were riding in the 500 block of Pacific Street about 4:30 a.m. when Pauley and Freeman got into an argument over $300 Pauley had allegedly given Freeman for marijuana.

Passengers in the vehicle said after the crime was committed Pauley sped away from the scene, "without any regard for the health and well-being of the victim," according to the criminal complaint.

Freeman later died.

A sobbing Pauley signed court documents in front of Magistrate Julie Yeager on Monday afternoon, telling the magistrate he intended to hire his own defense lawyer.

Just before his arraignment, he apologized to a police officer for losing his temper with television reporters.

Yeager ordered Pauley sent to South Central Regional Jail without bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. May 27.

With this guys impulsive nature, I wonder what he has done that WE, the public, don't realize yet? I feel better knowing he isn't out among the public....
