EAST BANK, W.Va - A Riverside High School student was killed in a one-vehicle accident on W.Va 61 near Crown Hill Tuesday afternoon.
Andrea Buchanan, 17, a junior and cheerleader, was alone in the vehicle when her car went off the road, according to the West Virginia State Police.
Buchanan was traveling south on W.Va 61 near East Bank when her 2001 Toyota Camry left the right side of the road and struck an embankment. She was ejected from the vehicle and was thrown more than 60 feet before landing on the opposite side of the road. She was not wearing a seat belt.
Buchanan was transported to the Charleston Area Medial Center General Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 4 p.m.
Her vehicle re-entered the roadway where it came to rest blocking both lanes of traffic, State Police said. The road was shut down for more than an hour.
