CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man has been charged with the murder of David Scarbro, 41, in Chelyan on Monday.
Detectives with the Kanawha Bureau of investigation arrested Jason William Holstein, 27 of Belle, and charged him with the murder. He is in South Central Regional Jail awaiting arraignment sometime today.
According to the initial report and medical examiner's autopsy, Scarbro had been severely beaten and shot at his residence in Chelyan on Monday. Investigators believe Holstein had planned to rob the victim of his drugs and money and killed the victim during the incident.
Police have said that Scarbro was the victim of an armed robbery in November. They said two armed men forced their way into Scarbro's home, threatened him and his family with a gun and took some money. At the time, police said they believed the robbery was drug-related.
Scarbro was charged in December with possession of OxyContin with intent to deliver. Police found the drugs after they accompanied a Child Protective Services worker into Scarbro's home to check on his teenage daughter.
According to news reports, Scarbro was also arrested on Christmas Day for several traffic violations, including driving on a suspended license and fleeing police.
The investigation is continuing and additional arrests may be forthcoming.
