CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies arrested one of two men they believe tried to break into businesses in the Cross Lanes area early Tuesday.

Deputies responded to a reported breaking and entering at the Dollar General Store on Doc Bailey Road about 1:40 a.m., said Lt. Bryan Stover of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. The suspects had run away by the time deputies got there, but Stover said deputies found evidence that someone had broken into the store.

The would-be thieves apparently tried to make off with the store's safe, but were thwarted because the safe was bolted to the floor.

About 15 minutes later, deputies got a call about breaking glass at Debbie G's Bar at the intersection of Big Tyler Road and Washington Street West. Again, the suspects got away, but Stover said a witness followed their car and called 911 from his cell phone.

The witness followed the car out Woodward Drive, where deputies were waiting with a road block, Stover said.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Daniel Shane Ferrell of Orgas, was arrested, but a passenger in the car ran into the woods and escaped. Ferrell was driving his mother's 2006 Chevrolet Malibu when he was stopped.

Ferrell was charged with two counts of breaking and entering. He was in the South Central Regional Jail on Tuesday in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Stover said additional arrests are expected.
