CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Putnam County woman was sentenced to three years and one month in prison Monday for embezzling more than $700,000 from her former employer.

Georgiana Ciavarello, 40, admitted to stealing the money from Quail Ridge Construction Company between September 2007 and November 2010, while she worked for the company as a bookkeeper, according to a media release from U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin's office.

U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers also ordered Ciavarello to pay slightly more than $1 million in restitution for the amount of the embezzled money, unpaid taxes and Social Security benefits she received as a result of the scheme, the release states.

Ciavarello would negotiate employee per diem checks for cash. She also failed to pay income taxes from 2007 to 2010, totaling about $216,000.

Chambers sentenced her to more prison time than federal sentencing guidelines call for, according to the release.
