Students collecting shoeboxes of items for elementary children

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Student council members at Winfield High School are again trying to collect shoeboxes filled with items for elementary students in McDowell County.

Last year, the students missed their goal and were only able to provide two out of four elementary schools with items, said Jillian Carney, a senior at Winfield.

"Being able to hand-deliver gifts was awesome -- very gratifying and humbling," she said. "So many times you do charity drives and don't get to see where the stuff ends up."

Student council members have enough items to help between 100 and 200 students, but hope to supply 590 elementary-aged students in McDowell with things like school supplies, sanitary items, clothes and anything a student might enjoy.

Donations, due before March 20, can be sent to Winfield High School, 3022 Winfield Rd., Winfield, WV 25213.
