CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Montcoal Mining Disaster Fund will close at the end of this month, after raising more than $750,000, the fund's manager said Wednesday.

The Rev. Dennis Sparks, the fund's manager and director of the West Virginia Council of Churches, announced that the fund will close on July 31. Any contributions received after that date will be placed with the council's Miners Support Fund, which helps mining families in financial crisis or in times of special needs.

Checks in equal amounts will be distributed to the 31 family recipients in early August including the two miners who were hospitalized after the explosion.
