WHITESVILLE, W.Va. -- Joy Mining Machinery has donated $35,000 to help pay for construction of a memorial honoring the 29 miners killed in the 2010 explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine.

The Register-Herald newspaper in Beckley reported that company officials presented the donation to the Upper Big Branch Memorial Group during a ceremony Monday at the memorial site in Whitesville.

Memorial group vice president Mike Gwinn said work on the memorial is moving forward but it won't be completed by April 5, the second anniversary of the disaster.

Gwinn said several new aspects were added after the contract was awarded.
