FBI honoring slain Charleston police officer

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- The FBI is planning a ceremony to honor a Charleston police officer who was fatally shot by fellow officers after a chase last year.

Officer Jerry Jones will be remembered Tuesday at the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg.

The 27-year-old Jones died from friendly fire in September while trying to capture a suspect who began ramming police cruisers with his truck following a pursuit. The suspect also was fatally shot.

Earlier this year state lawmakers passed legislation that would increase penalties for those who flee or obstruct law enforcement, particularly when injury or death results.
