MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Berkeley County's new public safety building won't be named in honor of a deputy killed in the line of duty.
The Berkeley County Sheriffs Association requested naming the building in honor of Deputy John L. Burkett III.
The county's Law Enforcement Building Committee denied the request. Deputy County Administrator Alan J. Davis told the association in a recent letter that the committee can't recommend naming any building after a specific person.
Association President Scott Myers tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, Md., that the group is disappointed.
Burkett died in January 2001 in a head-on collision while transporting a fugitive from Pennsylvania to Berkeley County.
