WHITESVILLE, W.Va. -- A Boone County firefighter is recovering in the hospital after the water tanker he was driving overturned near Whitesville Tuesday morning.

Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Hodges said David Massey, 54, of Whitesville, was responding to a fire on Woodrow Hendricks Drive when his tanker rolled over. Massey was badly injured and was flown by helicopter to CAMC General Hospital in Charleston.

Hodges said Massey was in stable condition Tuesday evening and was responsive and talking to family and friends.

"We appreciate everyone's concern and their prayers," Hodges said.

The Boone County Sheriff's Department and state Fire Marshal's office are investigating what caused the accident.
