SISSONVILLE, W.Va. -- Police are still trying to figure out what led a Sissonville man to fatally shoot another man at his home Wednesday morning.
Kanawha County sheriff's deputies went to a home at 3834 Sissonville Drive just after 1:30 a.m. to respond to reports of a shooting, according to Capt. Bryan Robbins of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. When they got there, they found Dale Thomas Newhouse, 55, waiting outside for deputies, Robbins said.
James "Jamie" Bryan Shaffer, 41, of Charleston, was inside with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. Robbins said a 32-year-old woman also was inside the home.
According to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, the emergency call was prompted when Shaffer called 911 and said Newhouse had just shot him. Shaffer told an emergency dispatcher that Newhouse was standing over him with a 9 mm handgun, the criminal complaint says.
Shaffer was taken to CAMC General Hospital, but died from his wounds, Robbins said.
Detectives are still piecing together what led to the shooting and are interviewing witnesses and relatives, he said.
Detectives were at the house most of Wednesday morning executing a search warrant. Robbins said guns were recovered from the house.
Newhouse was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bail in South Central Regional Jail. He has a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 8.
Newhouse was previously arrested and charged with malicious wounding in the shooting of a woman in December 2008, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
That charge was later dismissed for lack of evidence, according to court records.
