SISSONVILLE, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies have identified a man who died after being hit by a car on Interstate 77 on Wednesday.

Stephen M. Staudt Sr., 54, was standing in or near the traffic lane of northbound Interstate 77 near the Edens Fork exit at about 8:30 a.m., according to Capt. Bryan Robbins of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. Staudt's identification listed an address in Ohio, but Robbins said his relatives were tracked down in Pennsylvania.

Winnifer G. Jones, 46, of Huntington, was driving north in a 2010 Nissan Versa when he saw Staudt. Robbins said Jones tried to brake to avoid the man, but lost control of the Nissan and ended up hitting him. It was raining hard at the time of the accident.

Deputies were still reconstructing the accident Thursday. Staudt is the third person struck and killed by vehicles in the area in recent weeks.
