Ex-Salem official on trial in theft of city funds

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- A former Salem official is on trial on charges of taking money from the city.

A grand jury indicted former City Manager David Mayle in 2010. His trial is under way this week in Harrison County Circuit Court.

A co-defendant, former City Clerk Sherry Olenick, pleaded guilty in September to falsifying accounts and conspiring to embezzle city funds. She agreed to cooperate in the case against Mayle.

Media outlets report that several former Salem officials and former employees testified Wednesday.

Two former police clerks said they left checks that they wrote for the city with Mayle to send to companies. The companies then called and said they didn't receive the checks.

The former clerks also said no explanations were given for a number of transactions from the city's general funds.
