WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Posts on social media websites during the weekend prompted extra security at Winfield Middle School Monday morning, according to the Winfield police chief.

Threats to bring a gun or a bomb to the school turned out to have been exaggerated by students over the Internet, according to Chief John Perrine. However, three Winfield police officers were at the school with a police dog, he said.

A 13-year-old male student, who had been bullied for about one year, did threaten to retaliate against other students, Perrine said. But, only about "30 percent of the [social] media posts were accurate."

"He didn't have the means nor the intellect to build a bomb or the means to get a weapon," Perrine said.

The boy was searched when he exited the school bus and no weapons were found, according to the chief.
