CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The chief of police of Winfield said Saturday that he arrested a Charleston firefighter and charged him with driving while intoxicated.

According to Chief John Perrine, officers arrested Grant Kelly Gunnoe Jr. and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol, fleeing and obstructing an officer.

In a news release, Perrine said police first noticed a Bronco traveling at a high rate of speed south bound in Winfield Saturday evening. Officers tried several times to get the vehicle to pull over. Eventually, officers boxed in the vehicle in the area of Hidden Cove Marina, nearly 3 miles from the point where the pursuit began.

Once stopped, police instructed the driver several times to get out of his vehicle. Perrine said officers had to physically remove Gunnoe "at gunpoint." In his news release, Perrine also said, "The driver was incoherent, had a lack of motor skill and fell back to the road way."

Perrine said Gunnoe, who is 39, "asked police for leniency because he is a Charleston fireman."

Gunnoe's blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit, Perrine said.
