CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man stabbed his ex-girlfriend and then sexually assaulted the woman early Sunday morning, police say.

Police arrested 20-year-old Erique Harris, of Charleston, after they say he stabbed the woman twice in the left arm, ordered her to the ground and assaulted her, according to a criminal compliant filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The incident happened around 7:15 a.m. at Wertz Avenue and Kanawha Boulevard.

When police arrived at the scene, Harris allegedly had the woman dress and told her to walk with him, according to the complaint. The two walked eastbound on train tracks behind the Open Door Apostolic Church in the 2600 block of Kanawha Boulevard East, police say.

When police asked the Harris and the woman to stop, the man ran eastbound on the tracks until police stopped and detained him, according to the complaint.

Police recovered a bloody knife after the arrest, according to police.

Harris is charged with malicious wounding and first-degree sexual assault. He remains in South Central Regional Jail.
