CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A 36-year-old Morgantown man has been convicted of third-degree murder in the death of a Monongalia County sheriff's deputy after a high-speed chase on Interstate 79 in February.

The jury in Waynesburg, Pa., found Jerod Green guilty after deliberating for a few hours Thursday, according to media reports from north central West Virginia.

Police were chasing Green near Mt. Morris, Pa., just north of the West Virginia state line, when he crashed into a patrol car driven by Sgt. Michael May, 41, a Monongalia County sheriff's deputy, on Feb. 18 and killed him.

Green's attorney had argued in court that Green didn't mean to crash into May's vehicle. 

The chase began in Monongalia County. Police attempted to pull Green over on suspicion of DUI. The speed of Green's vehicle had reached about 98 miles per hour, according to media reports. 

WBOY in Clarksburg reported that Green was also found guilty Thursday of homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while DUI, fleeing and three counts of DUI.
