BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police are investigating allegations that about $5,000 was embezzled from the city of Bluefield.

City attorney Brian Cochran tells media outlets that the investigation began in November after the Internal Revenue Service levied about $14,000 in penalties against three city bank accounts. The penalties resulted from late payments and filings of employee payroll taxes.

While investigating the IRS matter, the city received information about the possible theft of city funds

Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ash says the investigating is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

Cochran says city official are reviewing the city's accounts and finances, along with its system of checks and balances.
