HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A Huntington police officer fatally shot a tractor-trailer driver from Alabama after police say the trucker attempted to attack him with a knife.

Police Chief Skip Holbrook identified the trucker as 32-year-old Joshua Johnie Emerson of Hamilton, Ala., according to the Herald-Dispatch.

Holbrook said the deadly confrontation occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday after the officer on routine patrol went to investigate a collision between a tractor-trailer and a small car.

The chief said Emerson brandished the knife toward a security guard then turned it on the officer when he attempted to intervene.

The officer responded by firing several rounds from his service revolver, killing Emerson.

The officer was not identified. The officer is on paid administrative leave while the deadly force shooting is being investigated.
