State Police shoot, kill suspect in Logan slaying

LOGAN, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police have confirmed the shooting of a suspect wanted in connection with a homicide in Logan on Tuesday.

West Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said he was notified that a suspect was shot and killed during a police chase in the Man area of Logan County at around 7 p.m. Thursday. "None of our people are hurt," he said.

Baylous identified the suspect as John Edward Dempsey, 37. State Police had been looking for Dempsey in connection with the homicide of 88-year-old Grover Morrison of Logan on Tuesday. Morrison's car was taken from his home, but later found in the Man area.

Baylous said Dempsey was involved in a shooting death earlier Thursday in the Taplin area, then attempted a home invasion nearby. Baylous said that attempt was unsuccessful because the homeowner had a weapon and scared the suspect off.

Baylous said Dempsey then carjacked a car and led troopers on a chase, but abandoned the car before pulling a gun on troopers near Man. Dempsey was then shot and killed. Baylous said he believed the woman who owned the car Dempsey stole was unharmed.
