CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The name of a man fatally shot by Kanawha County sheriff's deputies in Pinch on Saturday night was released Sunday afternoon.
Deputies say Lawrence Edward "Pete" Vaughan, 49, of Pinch, fired multiple rounds at them following a domestic disturbance call, Cpl. B.D. Humphreys said in a news release.
Deputies said a woman called her neighbor at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday and said her son, Vaughan, was beating her. The neighbor called 911 and deputies responded to a house in the 5100 block of Quick Road, off County Route 49.
"Upon approaching the house and the front porch, the suspect was observed by deputies exiting with a handgun," Kanawha County Sheriff Johnny Rutherford said. "At that point the deputies took a defensive position.
Rutherford said Vaughan then fired multiple shots at deputies, and they returned fire, fatally wounding him. No deputies were injured.
Vaughan lived with his mother at the Quick Road address, where the incident occurred, Humphreys said.
