Multiple wrecks reported in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Blowing snow and wintry weather led to several wrecks this morning in Kanawha County.

Although the Charleston area received barely a dusting of snowfall overnight, more northern parts of Kanawha County got an inch or more. Some untreated back roads and snowy conditions on Interstate 79 led to a number of accidents.

A Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatcher said 10 wrecks were reported in the county between about 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., six in the Clendenin area. Only one of the accidents was in Charleston.

Three of the accidents were along Interstate 79. Carrie Bly, a spokeswoman with the state Division of Highways, said salt trucks were out and working this morning, but some previously treated roads had melted and refrozen, and snowfall in higher elevations was again sticking to the interstate.

Traffic on Interstate 79 south of the Amma exit and north of Clendenin was traveling at about 35 mph about 7:30 a.m., with blowing snow and snow covering both lanes. A pickup truck was overturned in the median just south of the Amma exit in Roane County.

Bly said road crews in the area had been out since about 4 p.m. Wednesday. "They're probably going to be working through Saturday," she said.

More snow is expected over the next several days.
