CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- More than a dozen people are seeking to replace former Jefferson County Sheriff Robert Shirley.

Shirley is awaiting sentencing for violating the civil rights of a bank robber beaten after a 2010 police chase.

County Commission president Dale Manuel tells The Journal (http://bit.ly/VGyHtl ) that 16 people applied for the sheriff's job by Friday's deadline. They include eight residents from Charles Town, four from Kearneysville, two from Harpers Ferry and one each from Millville and Shepherdstown.

The candidate appointed by the commission will serve the remainder of Shirley's term.

He resigned in January after pleading guilty in the criminal case. A civil lawsuit is pending.
