MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Five Martinsburg police officers are on paid administrative leave while West Virginia State Police investigate the fatal shooting of a Virginia man who allegedly stabbed one officer.
Media outlets said police shot Wayne Arnold Jones, 50, of Stephens City, Va., Wednesday night after he ignored orders to drop a knife he pulled on the officers. They had stopped him as he walked on a city street, but the reason was not immediately clear.
Jones told the officers he had a weapon but wouldn't say what it was, police said, and he grew angry and refused their subsequent orders. He fled into a doorway, and the officers pursued.
In the scuffle that followed, police said, the officers used stun guns on Jones, and he allegedly stabbed one of the officers in the torso.
Police then shot Jones several times.
The officer's stab wound turned out to be minor, and police said he did not require treatment.
Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely said an autopsy on Jones was scheduled for Friday in Morgantown.
The incident is the third fatal police shooting in Martinsburg in less than two years.
Police also shot and killed a woman who allegedly pointed a gun at them in December and a man who allegedly carjacked a woman and her 4-year-old daughter in September 2011.
