CLARKSBURG - An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in Harrison County late Sunday as he lay asleep in bed.
Harrison County Sheriff Albert Marano identified the victim as William Owens of Jarvisville.
Marano said the boy's father and grandmother, Tina Owens, 57, had been hearing noises outside their homes during the night and apparently thought there were intruders on their property in a rural part of Harrison County. The two homes are about 200 yards apart.
The boy's father had already been outside once to investigate, Marano said. More sounds were heard before 11:30 p.m., and Tina Owens went outside her house with a .40 caliber handgun to investigate herself, Marano said.
He said Tina Owens fired several shots in an attempt to scare the intruders away, but that a stray bullet went through the other house, striking William Owens in the chest as he lay asleep.
Marano said the shooting appeared to be accidental.
The investigation is ongoing. Marano said a report would be issued to Harrison County prosecutor Joe Shaffer to determine whether any charges should be filed.
