CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Charleston men charged in a shooting that police said was motivated by the murder of their friend were indicted on various charges Thursday.
Jon Paul Clements, 31, and Robert Jared Smith, 34, were charged with attempted murder, malicious wounding, conspiracy and wanton endangerment in March. A Kanawha County grand jury handed up the indictments on Thursday.
Police said Clements and Smith fired more than 60 rounds from three different guns at Andre Williamson, 25, and Cierra Leftwich, 22, on March 9. Williamson and Leftwich, both of Charleston, were shot multiple times in the legs while standing in front of Seoul of Charleston restaurant on Washington Street West.
Police believe the shooting was in retaliation for the October 2012 shooting death of David Juaboi Booker, who was gunned down on Milton Street. Booker, Williamson and Richard Bernard Hilliard were all sitting together in a car at the time of the shooting. Hilliard pleaded guilty in March to voluntary manslaughter for the killing.
In all, a Kanawha County grand jury indicted 66 defendants Thursday. An indictment is not a finding of fact; it only means that grand jurors have decided that enough evidence exists to warrant a criminal trial.
